With Shadow, I was inspired to write about a contemporary conflict. War continues to divide people, to change them forever, and I write about it both because I want people to understand the absolute futility of war, the "pity of war" as Wilfred Owen called it. All I knew was what I'd been told, that he'd given his life for our freedom. I knew my uncle Pieter, killed in 1940 in the RAF, through a photograph, through the stories I heard of him, through the grief my mother, his sister, lived every day of her life. But I soon learned that much more than buildings was destroyed by war. I lived next to a bombsite, played in it because we weren't supposed to, and because it was the best adventure playground imaginable. As I grew up, I soon learned how war had torn my world apart.

They were given their powers by the Man in the Moon (which isn't explained well in the movie, but looking at the ending credits, it seems as though a short film will be included with the movie upon its official release. The movie takes place after the books, when beloved characters such as Santa, the Toothfairy, the Easter Bunny, and The Sandman (all with actual names, of course) have long since sworn the Oath of the Guardians. He didn't want people comparing the movie to the book and saying one format was superior to the other, which is something often heard when books become movies. Together with Dreamworks, he decided that he wanted RISE OF THE GUARDIANS to be an original movie with no book exactly telling its story. Interestingly, William Joyce has spent about 20 years developing his series and building the Guardians of Childhood franchise, creating picture books, chapter books, and now, movies. I've been looking forward to this movie since first hearing about it because I thought the first picture book in the series, THE MAN IN THE MOON, was brilliant and captivating. I was lucky enough to score free passes to an advance 3-D Screening of Dreamworks' holiday blockbuster RISE OF THE GUARDIANS. His other geniuses left behind bountiful source material about the lives they led. There is a significant difference, though, between “Leonardo da Vinci” and Isaacson’s previous biographies. Like the other idols in Isaacson’s gallery of polymaths and visionaries - Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Steve Jobs - Leonardo da Vinci was born with extra bundles of receptors, attuned to frequencies his peers could not hear and capable of making connections no one else could see, especially between the sciences and the humanities. Because Walter Isaacson has made a cottage industry of writing about Renaissance men, it’s no surprise, really, that he’s finally landed on a subject from the actual Renaissance.
